Fire Ranger Trail Badge

This Trail Badge, awarded on completion of the requirements, is affixed to the Trailman’s Troop Standard.
Do all requirements (1-6).
- Explain how the low-impact camping method (See The Trailman’s Handbook) relates to fires and helps fulfill the Trailman Oath to “be a good steward of creation.”
- Research what the Bible says about fire.
- List at least three instances of fire in the Bible.
- How is fire a curse and a blessing to mankind?
- Read Exodus 3:2, Judges 13:20, Hebrews 12:29, Acts 2:3-4. How does God use fire to describe his presence, passion, and purity in the Bible?
- How did man’s ability to start, sustain, and control fire change the world?
- Fire safety
- Explain the use of buckets, rakes, and shovels in containing a campfire in a certain location.
- Describe safe places to have a campfire, how to learn local regulations, and how to set up a fire circle.
- Describe safe vs. unsafe clothing near campfires and open flames.
- Describe safe vs. unsafe behavior around a campfire.
- Demonstrate how to put out fire on your clothing, hair, or body.
- Demonstrate safe striking of stick and book matches and safe use of a lighter.
- Fire materials
- Explain the use and purpose of tinder, kindling, and fuel firewood.
- Explain why wet, green, or ant/vine-covered wood is unsafe and not good for fires.
- Describe several types of fire starters that can be made or purchased.
- Fire building
- Demonstrate building at least three different fire-lays and explain when you would use each one.
- Light one of the fire lays, attend it, and keep it burning.
- When finished with the fire, demonstrate the proper way to extinguish it to dead out.
